FRANZ EDMUND WEIROTTER was one of the most distinguished of the German 18th century landscape etchers. Painter, draftsman and etcher, he was born in Innsbruck in 1733. He trained in Vienna before moving to Paris (1759-63), then to Rome, and to Vienna in 1767 as professor of engraving. He died in Vienna in 1771.

In his short working life (he was only thirty eight when he died) Weirotter completed a prodigious quantity of prints. There are well over three hundred pltes that include a wide variety of landscapes. There is a formal quality in his views of towns but his villages and cottage scenes are charmingly rustic in character. His compositions contain strong diagonals, and the way in which he provided light and texture to the landscapes marks him out as a quality etcher. His work was distributed widely and were eagerly sought by print collectors. The Scottish etcher John Clerk of Eldin (see below) made copies of three Weirotter’s etchings in improving his own technique.
