ANTHONIE WATERLOO is best known, deservedly, for his trees and forest scenes. Born 1609 at Ryssel near Lille in what is now northern France, little is known of his early life. It is thought he was self-taught as an artist, and although registered as a painter, he had little success in selling his own canvases and, apparently, supported himself through his activities as an art dealer in addition to selling his drawings and prints. He was active in Amsterdam, Leeuwarden and Utrecht, where he died in 1690.

Waterloo was among the first artists to establish a reputation almost entirely based on his work as a draftsman. His oil paintings are scarce, but his graphic work is widely found in European museums. His work as a dealer brought him into contact with many respected contemporary artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Roelant Roghman and Caesar van Everdingen, from whom he absorbed a variety of influences. Nonetheless he established a distinct etching style, depicting landscape in a recognisable northern style untainted by Italian skies.

His etching work is extensive. Many are simply pastoral views populated by travellers, and there are several from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a book that was widely used by artists as a source for images. The three etchings presented here are very fine classic examples of his work. Waterloo’s etchings were much admired by British collectors and art critics. The influential Rev William Gilpin, whose opinions are a reflection of taste in 18th century Britain, expressed that “No artist had a happier manner of expressing trees than WATERLO”.
